Prospective Student (Information) Form

Office of Enrollment Management

The College's open rolling admissions policy seeks to be consistent with the purposes and philosophy of the College.  With a high school or general equivalency diploma as a basic requirement, applicants will be admitted to a program offered by the College.  Certain programs have special academic requirements, and the decision concerning admissions to these programs is based upon an evaluation of the applicant's academic and/or special achievements to date.  The final decision rests with the Enrollment Management Office, and alternative programs will be offered to those students who do not meet these special requirements.  Admission to North Country Community College is determined without regard to the applicant's race, color, creed, national origin, age, sex, disability, sexual orientation or marital status.

Residents from our sponsoring area of Essex and Franklin Counties are given priority or admission to all programs if their completed application is received by March 1st.  Although sponsorship area residents are given priority in admissions, students from other areas are encouraged and welcomed to apply.

Classification of Students

Matriculated Status is assigned to those students who have been accepted by the College into a degree or certificate program.  A matriculated student may enroll as a full-time or part-time student and may attend either day or evening classes.

Non-matriculated Status is assigned to those students who are not active candidates for a degree.  This status may also be assigned to students whose previous high school and/or college records indicates achievement below the standards set for matriculation.  All students must matriculate into a program after completing 24 credits of study unless permission is granted from the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Full-Time Student is a matriculated or non-matriculated student who is enrolled in 12 or more credit hours per semester.

Part-Time Student is matriculated or non-matriculated student who is enrolled for less than 12 credit hours per semester.

Freshman is any student that has completed less than 32 credit hours.

Sophomore is any student that has completed 32 or more credit hours.

Application Procedure

All degree seeking students must complete and submit NCCC's Application for Admission for Matriculated Status.  Applications can be obtained from high school guidance departments, directly from the Enrollment Management Office at PO Box 89, Saranac Lake, NY 12983-0089, or you can Apply Online.  The application process is free of charge, with the exception of a processing fee to cover additional placement test requirements in the Nursing, Radiologic Technology, and Massage Therapy programs.  Please contact the Enrollment Management Office for further details.

All degree seeking students should submit official transcripts of previous academic work including a high school transcript or copy of a GED, transcripts from previous colleges, and military records (DD214's) to the Enrollment Management Office once the Application for Admission has been completed.  The results of standardized tests such as the American College Test (ACT) or the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) may be submitted, but are not a requirement for admission.  Those planning to transfer to a four-year college should give attention to such examinations where necessary.

Students not seeking a degree from NCCC may register for classes at the Registrar's Office on a non-matriculated basis.  Should a non-matriculated student desire to work toward a degree at a later date, he or she must apply to the Enrollment Management Office for a change of status.  If the student is accepted to matriculated status, all related courses successfully completed will apply toward a degree.  The Enrollment Management staff is available to assist students in establishing their educational goals and completing registration procedures.

Campus Visits

Prospective students and parents are encouraged to visit the College and speak with an Enrollment Management Assistant and faculty members.  Please call the Enrollment Management Office at 518-891-2915, call toll free at 1-888-TRY-NCCC (888-879-6222), or contact the office by e-mail at admissions@nccc.edu to arrange and appointment.

If you have already had a campus visit, please tell us how it was by completing our Tour Survey.  It takes about five minutes and the responses will be used to enhance the next campus experience.

Advanced Standing

The College may grant course credit for passing, at any acceptable level, examinations administered under the Advanced Placement Program (APP), the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), and New York State Proficiency Examinations.  Credits may also be awarded for courses completed through non-collegiate organizations as recommended in A Guide to Educational Programs in Non-Collegiate Organizations, published by the State University of New York.  The College does not accept clinical experience or credits from other institutions to satisfy certificate and degree clinical or internship graduation requirements.

Placement Testing

North Country Community College adheres to an open door rolling admission policy.  Admission to the College, however, does not automatically guarantee admission to a particular curriculum or program.  All matriculated and non-matriculated freshmen and transfer students will be tested in English and mathematics to assure proper placement.  Certain specific curricula may require additional testing and/or a personal interview.

International Students

International students seeking admission and INS Form I-20 must provide additional information with their application.  Applicants who are not native speakers of English must demonstrate proficiency in English by submitting a paper score of 500/electronic score of 194 or better, or an internet score fo 68 or higher with a minimum of 17 or higher required for each portion,  on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), a GED taken in English, or a high school diploma from an institution at which the language of instruction is English.

Transfer / Returning Students and Advanced Standing

Those transfer students wishing to receive credit for courses from other colleges must have earned a "C-" or better.  Grades of "D" will transfer to NCCC as General Elective credit only.  The maximum number of credits transferable is further limited by the policy that no more than 31 credit hours can be transferred to North Country Community College to qualify for an Associates degree and no more than 15 credit hours to qualify for a Certificate.  Grades and quality points for courses transferred into NCCC will not appear on the transcript and will not be used in calculating the grade point average at the College.  *To qualify for transfer, credits must be less than ten years old.  Credits taken at NCCC, where matriculation has been broken, will also be subject to the ten-year rule.

Credit by Extension

A student may earn credits in pursuit of an Associate degree at North Country Community College by participating in any approved off-campus program of independent study, examination for credit, or any other accredited form of external study.  A student must apply and be accepted to matriculated status at North Country Community College before credit will be granted.  No grades will be awarded to the student, and credit will be given only for courses that correspond reasonably with the College's course offerings.  A student desiring to enter such a program should indicate this intention to the Vice President for Academic Affairs in order to receive proper credit for such study.  Pre-approval is highly recommended.  Participation in an independent program in no way changes a student's official status at North Country Community College.

Following are some of the programs North Country Community College will accept for credit in keeping with the above requirements:

-College Entrance Examination Board College-Level Examination Program

-New York State College Proficiency Examination Program

-New York State Independent Study Program

-New York State University of the Air Program

-Applications for an information on any of the above may be obtained from any high school guidance office, the Student Services Office at NCCC, or by writing directly to the program office.  Upon completion of the program, all materials should be submitted to the Enrollment Management Office for evaluation.

High School Equivalency

An individual who has not graduated from high school or received a GED (General Equivalency Diploma) may apply to the New York State Education Department, Office of High School Equivalency Programs and GED Testing, for a GED by successfully completing twenty-four (24) credit hours of college course work and demonstrating satisfactory progress toward a degree.  Six specific areas of distribution are required within the 24 credit hours.  Interested parties should contact the Records Office for further information.  *Please note that courses numbered below 100 (remedial), physical education, college skills or freshman seminar courses, will not be accepted toward the twenty-four credits.  Forms for application to the State Education Department are available from the Records Office.

Students may qualify under Federal guidelines for "Ability to Benefit" financial aid from college coursework by scoring appropriately on College placement examinations or may complete such credits on a non-matriculated basis.  Ability To Benefit testing may only be taken once during an academic year.

Joint Admissions Programs

North Country Community College offers to first-year NCCC students a number of joint admissions programs with both public and private four-year colleges and universities.

Joint admissions allows students the opportunity to complete two years at NCCC followed by enrollment as a junior at a joint admission institution.  This program is ideal for students hesitant to begin their studies at a four-year college, or for those students who may not meet admission requirements at the participating four-year institution.  The student is not required to re-apply at the joint admission institution once they have met NCCC's admission and degree requirements.  Students who wish to be jointly accepted to NCCC and another institution must declare their intentions prior to the end of the second semester of study at NCCC.

Students interested in this program should contact the Enrollment Management Office for a listing of participating colleges and universities, program of study available and necessary documents to be filed.
